Women’s History Month with Johanna Hase

What are you most proud of achieving in your medical career?

That’s easy — surviving residency!

It was the toughest three years of my life, both physically and emotionally. It was also an incredibly rewarding experience filled with strong friendships, a LOT of personal growth, and meaningful patient interactions.

What brings you hope for the future of the medical industry?

Medicine is slow to change, but I’m hopeful when I see all the advocacy happening around improving work-life balance and promoting equity within medicine. I think we have come a long way, but still have a lot of work to do.

What advice would you give to folks working (or just starting their careers) in the medical industry?

Make sure to take care of yourself and prioritize your well-being. You can’t take good care of patients if you’re not taking care of yourself. It sounds so cliché, but it’s true.

Also, don’t forget that there are other amazing opportunities and “non-traditional” career paths if you decide that clinical care isn’t for you as a full-time job.

I love that at AMBOSS, I’m still helping patients and working closely with other physicians, but don’t have to work nights and weekends.
